I got a Request from a Band I Gigged with in London eons ago....
They've sent me their two new tracks to Slip in my earholes and hulk smash the keyboard until words come out!
Tiny Birds are a tasty group from the Smoke who play Indie Folk or what ever its called nowadays.
When we Gigged at Nambucca they Impressed me for two reasons
1.They had a Banjo
2.Dispite playing to an audience that was 50% me, (due to a promotor who needs to fuck off back into his own arsehole) they fucking went for it as if the venue was loaded.
Both of the soon to be reviewed tunes were played and i have to say i've been looking forward to getting hold of some of their music.
The Review
I suppose I should get the comparison to "Mumford and sons" out the way, so my more metal minded friends don't get confused when its not Death Meatal in thier lug holes... there are hints of Laura Marling in the vocal melody composition, and even a bit of Blur wierdness in the Lyrics.
The actual sound is quite..."Safe" by folk standards, straying close to "Mumford" (without the God Crap). It may be a welcome change in Indie/Electro Britain, but it is in danger of getting lost in the the folk scene.
The fun comes in the energy of the live show and the Lyrics provide the originality wth a hint of strangeness, Similar to a Chap whos been out in the sun with the pimms for too long.
By the By..
Im not going to review anything about recording quality, or levels or crap like that. I'm interested in weather i like the song or not.
"For god sakes Jim im a Folk Musician not an Engineer!!"
Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Your Anger
This one has a pleasant little riff and chuggs along nicely, nothing too out there but a good little tune. Sadly it has lost a bit of energy and speed since i heard it live.
I like the Combination on Ukulele and Banjo on this track it gives it a very summeryjamacanyhilbilly feel but the vocals and the skiffle style drumming root it nicely back in Blighty. Combined with the Dexy's midnight runners style Chorus it makes you think to yourself that if you saw it live you would be dancing. The record itself sounds a bit more relaxed, by comparison to Tiny Birds Live.
I do However, love the quiet middle part, its like Jamaican Trumpton!
Jeff GoldblumJeff Goldblum (the song not the man) has a slow build that leads to an interesting little chord motif..y thing.I was expecting a drop and some fast foot-stomping after the build up,but its nice to be surprised every now and its a great little chilled out song. The end sequence feels like it could easily jammed with live, and makes you want to hear more.
The Use of Jeff's Filmography as an Lyrical device Is a tasty idea.
But i do want to talk to the lyricists tooth-fairy as I only got 50p for a tooth.
A good pair of tracks they work well together,I do suggest listening to Jeff first though. Have a chill with a nod to the 'Blum before having a dance.. in your mind.
Bring on the Album.
"Jeff" and "Dont let the sun" will be released on the 9th of April. It's free so there's no excuse not to! meanwhile have a look here:http://tinybirds.bandcamp.com/
